Pastor Terry Tupper - Assistant Pastor
If you asked anyone when I was younger what I wanted to be when I grew up, the title Assistant Pastor would never had crossed their minds, mine neither for that matter. But the following is a short summary of how it came to pass. I was born in Flint and I grew up in Montrose, MI. At various periods of my adolescence I attended church with friends from school. I was not raised in a “Christian” home but had two loving parents that did their best to show me right from wrong. As I came into my teenage years I worshiped the Unholy trinity;” Me, Myself & I”. I knew of the Lord but he definitely wasn’t the focus of my life. Having said that, the Lord never forgot about me. I got into a fair amount of trouble with the law while in high school and by the time I had finished college, the Lord had saved me from eminent death more times than I care to recall. In 1999 the Lord bestowed upon me a blessing that changed my life. Her name is Diane. He provided exactly what I needed and when I needed her. She is my wife, best friend, a wonderful counselor, and a magnificent mother of our four children. Shortly after getting married we moved to Iowa for a job with John Deere. After settling into a home we found a nice bible church just around the corner from our house. On good Friday of 2000 I gladly, willfully, and wonderfully submitted my life to the Lord and now I knew for sure He was my savior. We were in Iowa for four years and served regularly and watched the Lord chip away at the edges. In 2005 my job with John Deere would move us to Kernersville, NC. After settling in, again we went in search of a church. Our first choice was a rather large church that had been recommended to us. We tolerated it for three Sundays and then made a decision after Diane had attended a Woman’s bible study. Obviously she was the new person and sadly no one in the study made an attempt to reach out and befriend her. The following Sunday we attended a smaller church called Calvary Chapel. We were greeted with smiles and hugged by more people that first Sunday than any time we went home to be with “family”. It was immediately obvious the Holy Spirit dwelled within that body. Pastor David taught expository style and that was everything we were looking for. We had to wait three LONG months before we could serve to ensure our biblical foundations were secure, but as soon as that time period was up, we were plugged in and serving. In no time at all we were involved with so many ministries that it was nothing to have spent upwards of 20hrs at church a week. The really awesome thing was there were so many other families doing the same and it all felt so natural.
Diane was an integral part of the women’s ministry, children’s hospitality and children’s worship leader. I was involved with the media ministry, mostly the sound system but branched to video as well. We held concerts every Friday night in the summers and would host usually 3 bands each night. We got involved with teaching Crown Financial classes and were hosting regular sessions at our house. Being this involved definitely helped in keeping us focused on the Lord, there wasn’t time for much else! The Lord definitely used this to put us on the fast track to fulfill his word in Ephesians 4:12 “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,”. Next the Lord would take all of our newfound skills and direct us to use them in Michigan. I was blessed with a new job in 2007 that allowed us to move back here to be closer to family, which is what we ultimately desired. Shortly after getting settled in we found Calvary Chapel of Flint, and as soon as Pastor Chuck would allow it we taught a Crown Financial class and got back into serving and have not looked back!
