The Lord is sending Peter into gentile territory, because of His love for the gentiles. And Peter will learn something about his own heart in all of this.

Acts 7:1-60 "His First Martyr"

In Acts 6 we’re introduced to Stephen. We’re told about this man that he was “full”... full of the Holy Spirit, full of wisdom, full of faith and full of power. He was selected as one of the seven deacons to serve the body there in Jerusalem. And we’re told in vs 8 of ch 6 that he is also a man who did many signs and wonders among the people. We’re also told that he disputed with those of the Synagogue of the “Freedman” and that they could not resist him and what he said concerning Jesus Christ. And from their complaints we realize that he was using the OT scriptures to show that it all pointed to Jesus Christ.

And in so doing they believe him to be undermining Moses, the Law and the Temple. So they induce men to say he’s blaspheming... and they seize him and drag him before the Sanhedrin council. The council is staring at him and seeing his face like the face of an angel. That is where we find our story pick up.

Acts 6:1-15 "Through Distraction"

“The devil’s next attack was the cleverest of the three. Having failed to overcome the Church by either persecution or corruption, he now tried distraction. If he could preoccupy the Apostles with social administration, which though essential was not their calling, they would neglect their God-given responsibilities to pray and to preach, and so leave the Church without any defense against false doctrine.” - Stott
